5 Easy Geeky Girl Halloween Costumes
Well crap. 10 days until Halloween and you don’t have a costume. You don’t want to just buy one off the rack, but you’re lacking in sewing and crafting skills, not to mention time and funds. Fear not! Read this list, then grab your purse and head to the nearest thrift or big box store (if these essentials aren’t already in your closet) to put together an easy geeky costume. Here we go!
1. Starbuck – Battlestar Galactica
Let’s start off in space with Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. You’re going to need a gray sleeveless crew neck T-shirt ($35 AllSaints Grey Stam Tank). You might need to head into the men’s section of your local store for that. Next, a black racerback tank top to wear backwards ($10.80 Forever 21 Seamless Racerback Run Tank). Pair that with some green cargo pants ($17 Dickies Women’s Relaxed Cargo Pant), black combat boots ($42 Yes Style Lace-Up Boots). and a gold dog tag. If you want the real deal dog tag, you can get recreations here for just $9.99.
Don’t forget the tattoo! Print out this stencil, then have a friend help you outline and fill it in with a black eyeliner pencil.
2. Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
Ol’ Lara got a reboot lately, so here’s two options for you: Classic and Revamp. The Classic Lara needs a crew neck tanktop or sleeveless tee in aqua ($5.90 Uniqlo ribbed tank top), and short brown cargo shorts ($20 Uniqlo summer shorts). She also wears white knee socks ($12 Roxy cotton knee socks). For Revamp Lara, swap the tank out for layered camis, white under pale blue ($9.99 Full Tilt blue camisole), and put on some long brown cargo pants ($28 RingBear brown cargo pants). Rough the revamped version up with some dirt, bandages, and a few fake cuts and scratches. For both versions, add a brown belt ($23 Target Mossimo genuine leather belt) and brown hiking boots ($35 Macy’s Rampage Boots). For hair, Classic Lara wears a braid, while Revamp Lara favors a ponytail.
For an extra layer of realism, buy a pair of tactical leg holsters ($21.45 Amazon Condor Tactical Leg Holsters) and twin toy guns.
3. Amy Pond – Doctor Who
Here’ something easy for the redheads! Amy Pond favors an almost Western style, so start off with a red flannel shirt ($29.99 DeerGear Women’s Cabin Retreat Plaid Flannel Shirt), and add Amy’s signature miniskirt ($16 UNIQLO Denim Skirt+E). Finish the look with sheer black tights ($8.50 Macy’s HUE Hosiery, Dot Tulle Sheer) and cowboy boots ($49 Country Outfitter Cowgirl Boots). If you like, add a red scarf ($18 Target Red Red Solid Knit Infinity Scarf) and brown leather bomber jacket ($45 Tilly’s FULL TILT Knit Collar Woman’s Bomber Jacket).
Don’t forget to cover your arms in tally marks… what were those tally marks for again?
4. Rochelle – Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead 2‘s Rochelle doesn’t get enough love. Start with a hot pink cap sleeve tee ($15 Zalando Vila OFFICIEL Basic Tshirt) and some tight bootcut dark jeans ($35 Wallis Fashion Blue Bootcut Jeans). Add brown buckle boots ($50 Modcloth BYO Banjo Boots) and the other essential accessories: gold hoop earrings ($32 Juicy Couture Small Classic Hoop Earringa), gold bangles ($6.40 Chiara Fashion Plain Gold Thin Bangle Set), and a brown studded belt ($4 Charlotte Russe Pyramid Stud Skinny Belt) to wear around you waist over the tee shirt.
But we can’t forget that Rochelle is a Depeche Mode fan! Download this image and print it (backwards!) onto iron-on transfer paper, then iron it onto your shirt. Smear your bad self with some fake blood and grab your favorite zombie killing weapon.
5. Mako Mori – Pacific Rim
Mako’s costume is all about the military. Don’t be afraid to hunt through the men’s section for her very masculine look. Let’s start with her super baggy dark blue cargo pants ($36 ASOS Pants with Soft Utility Detailing). Add a navy or black tanktop ($7.69 Witchery Poly Elastane Tank) and a military black belt ($13 Tilly’s Double Grommet Web Belt). When not barefoot, Mako wears combat boots ($40 Tilly’s BAMBOO Surprise Womens Boots). Add some dog tags ($11 ASOS Dog Tag), and do not forget the most important part of her look: blue highlights. Add some blue chalk ($4.99 Tilly’s Hair Artist Hair Chalk) to your hair or black bob wig.
