You Can’t be a Princess

October 22, 2012

As infuriating as this video is, the worst part of it is that no one came to the little boy’s rescue. It’s more socially acceptable to dress up like a boy than it is a girl. A girl who wants to be Spidey is strong, but a boy who wants to be a princess is… what? Weak? Gay? The kid was a good actor, too, explaining he didn’t want any of the “boy” options because they fight. He wants to be pretty, sure, but also caring and loving. Not a damn thing wrong with that.

I’ve got a post coming up where I take a look at the kids costume section at the local Target and notice some depressing trends in marketing towards boys and girls.  Stay tuned!

Reblogged this on Just A Thought and commented:
This I will never understand. There is nothing okay about telling a kid they can’t dress up however they want to.

The girl at the end was just amazing. Made me tear up, actually.. My state currently has an item on the ballot to amend the state constitution to define marriage between one man and one woman and I have been beside myself making sure I can vote this year–not just for the local issue, but for national issues, too. It’s so important, and that last woman summed it up perfectly.

She was amazing. Sadly, my state already voted on that issue. Poorly. It’s in the state constitution now, which means it will be very difficult to reverse, not to mention the legal ramifications when it comes to domestic violence convictions. Ugh. Good luck.
