Geeky Birthday Wishes to Price and Lee

May 27, 2011

There are too many birthdays today to pick just one, so you all get a two-for-one special with two old-school horror greats who happen to share a birthday.

Vincent Price (May 27, 1911 – October 25, 1993)

My first introduction to Vincent Price was the Disney Channel. Back in the 80’s, he hosted a little segment where he would share stories and drawings from viewers. My younger self being an aspiring artist and writer, I quickly became a fan of Vincent’s, having no idea what his career before then included. I spotted the horror legend next in his final role in Edward Scissorhands. Now that I’ve grown up and watched all his old movies and listened to his fantastic radio shows, I’m still a huge Vincent fan. Not only was he a terrific actor with an incredible voice, but he was also a loving husband, gourmet cook, vocal champion of civil rights, and was always generous to his fans. Today is his 100th birthday. Love you and miss you, Vincent.

Sir Christopher Lee (May 22, 1922)

We’ve blogged about Christopher Lee before, and his geek cred is amazing. Lee has played Dracula in more films than anyone, but he’s also played Sarumon in LOTR and Count Dooku in Star Wars. He’s also been the voice of Death in a few Terry Pratchett TV adaptations.

During World War II, Lee served in the Royal Air Force as a Special Operations Executive, and he was buddies (and a step-cousin) with Bond writer Ian Fleming. Which probably means Christopher Lee is the real James Bond. Just saying.

Also Celebrating Today: Harlan Ellison

Darkness falls across the land… the midnight hour is close at hand… Vincent is still awesome!
and Lee is my favorite Dracula by far.
