Superman the Brit

January 31, 2011

News broke over the weekend (when I was deep in a video game haze) that the new Zack Snyder directed Superman has been cast, and he is British actor Henry Cavill.

Me, I’ve never heard of him but agree that he certainly looks the part. But there are nerds in a tizzy that he’s another British actor in the role of an American icon, and somehow that’s scandalous.

Looking back, we’ve had Brit Christian Bale as Batman and Aussie Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (who is technically Canadian). Upcoming there’s Brit Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and Aussie Chris Hemworth as Thor (who technically is Norse).

Americans have played English icons. Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, for example. A bad example.I’m sure there’s a good example, but that’s not what I’m trying to say.

Me, I don’t care. Look, the point is the best actor should be hired for the job, regardless of nationality, color, sexuality, anything else. Remember those nuts in a tizzy over a BLACK Norse God in the upcoming film? If you ask me, nerds are doing the same thing here. To pass up a terrific actor for a role because of where he comes from is and awful thing to do.

And if you wanna get super-technical, Superman is a Kryptonian immigrant.

Ha, I was totally using him for a comic book model before DC went and stole my thunder. I should sue!

And Kevin Costner was an awesome Robin Hood.
